Background : Liver cirrhosis determines more than one million deaths per year worldwide. Liver transplantation has been considered as an excellent therapeutic option for patients with cirrhosis and its complications, producing a significant increase in life expectancy and improvement in quality of life. The aim of this study is to elaborate the characteristics of patients with liver cirrhosis in need for liver transplantation in Fatmawati Central General Hospital.
Methods : The design of this study was retrospective cohort involving patients admitted to the hospital between 2019 and 2021
Results : Among 70 liver cirrhosis patients, it was found that the average age was 52.9 ±11.4 years old and the percentage of male predominance (72.9%). Cirrhosis was related to Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C in 52.9% and 18.6% of patients, respectively. A concomitant hepatocellular carcinoma were only found in 7 patients (10%). The degree of cirrhosis according to Child-Pugh (CP) classification were 20% CP A, 54.3% CP B and 18.6% CP C. Based on the MELD score, 52.9% of our cirrhosis patients were liver transplant candidate with MELD of 15 or higher. Among 25 patients with MELD lower than 15, 6 patients had sever ascites, 1 had hepatic encephalopathy and 16 patients had esophageal varisces bleeding
Conclusions : The burden of liver cirrhosis is obvious, as also seen in our center. Liver transplant should be pursued for the benefit of this patients. Multidisciplinary team work with firm policy from the hospital administration is necessary to achieve that
